"Behind-the-shelf-Cheddar" is a euphemism.
The E.U. surplus cheese mountain is one of the largest in Europe, yet it is not shown on any map to prevent people from 3rd world countries coming to Europe and eating it all.
In the classic motor racing film "Le Mans" starring Steve Mc Queen (1971), Steve's character - Michael Delaney - is quite clearly seen consuming vast amounts of Roquefort on the pit-wall in order to sustain himself ahead of the night-time racing scenes.
"La crotte du diable" is a Belgian cheese with a strong odour. The name can be traslated to "Devil dung"
Edam is often misunderstood but rarely challenged.
